I have used a word of the year to aid my concentration, accountability, action-oriented motivation, and even self-reflection for the past ten years. I ask God to give me the word and to help me understand what He wants me to do.
Choosing a word for the year and seeking divine guidance through prayer can be a powerful way to set intentions and stay focused on positive change. This past weekend, I heard a sermon that made my word clear. I feel affirmation and conviction when I hear the word, depending on how it is intended for me.
I heard the word “inspire.” Subsequently, during the sermon, I heard some affirming words that I knew were directed toward me and what aspects of my relationship with God, my family, and myself I had been lacking. For example, my lack of patience, empathy, and supportive words has prevented me from being a good role model who teaches my kids to be good, caring, and God-fearing adults.
The preacher correlated discouragement and motivation, one that I had not thought about before. Positive and inspiring actions have a ripple effect, motivating others to join in and create a collective momentum for positive change. As others see you positively work through your discouragement; it breeds encouragement through testimony.

Transforming discouragement into a catalyst for positive change involves shifting perspectives and finding opportunities for growth in challenging situations. The brevity of life underscores the importance of making each moment count, leaving a positive impact, and inspiring change in the limited time we face.
I pray that you give me constructive criticism when I fail to inspire others around me so I can constantly assist others in developing ways that benefit Christ. May our journey be filled with grace and mercy as it is given fresh and new to us every day.
