No matter how much you try, some things are beyond your control

The absurdity with which we carry out menial tasks on the daily is astounding. Why do we subject ourselves to mediocrity and then blame society for where we are in our lot in life? What keeps us from making the choice to be better? Live fuller? Be something amazing? Is the natural reflex now to shun responsibility for own actions, searching for a scapegoat to pin blame, then still feel inadequate and alone?
I know people who are the most negative creatures in existence; they complain about everything and everyone and are never satisfied with anything. It is their lot in life to ridicule and debase everyone they come in contact with. They could drone on for days, weeks, even years with how horrible their spouse is, how they can never seem to get anything right, or weaken the very spirit of a fragile person by constantly telling them they should go on a diet; no one will like you if you don’t cut your hair; how dare you leave your house without makeup…
The saddest of all is the demeaned person(s) who soaks in all the negativity and cannot see the beauty through the thorns and thickets. They diminish their existence by agreeing with the negative cycle. They find themselves wrapped in a blanket of prickly thorns trying to find the softer side in life, all the while gravitating toward the negative energy like it is a life source.
I believe it was Einstein that said, “doing the same thing over and over expecting different results is the definition of insanity”. We look at these people and wonder how they let themselves fall prey to this debauchery. Yet if we are truly honest with ourselves, it is like looking in a mirror. That person explained above is really us. A shell of the person we used to be before we allowed others to control our thoughts and feelings.
I say this is an exercise in futility. How can we help change anyone else if we fail to see that we are the ones who are flawed? Make a choice to be better. Make a choice to see the good in everything. Make a choice to be thankful for the breath in your lungs. Make a choice to continue to fight for you. Don’t let anyone steal your soul.
Be yourself; everyone else is taken – Oscar Wilde
